USL League One Playoff Odds: Player's Shield, Home Spots and the Bubble

With the 2026 season winding down, we have a good idea of the playoff picture. Six clubs have already clinched a spot, with two more on the edge. Those two should get across the line, based on overall odds.

Here we go over the picture as it stands today, and evaluate if the teams still in the bubble have a shot using probability.

Player's Shield

The winner of the regular season table is down to two sides: Charlotte Independence and Union Omaha.

An ugly Omaha home loss over the weekend to Fort Wayne, coupled with a dominant Charlotte win over the Cosmos propelled the Jacks to the top spot by two points with two matches each left to play.

Charlotte will finish out the season with a short trip to Greenville, followed by a home match against Portland. Both opponents are eliminated from contention and struggling for results.

Meanwhile, Omaha will finish the season on the road at Westchester and Madison, two very challenging and unpredictable sides. The former may be eliminated from the playoffs, but has made life miserable for recent opponents, with four wins and a draw in its last five. Meanwhile, Madison will be fighting for its life to maintain a home playoff spot, with three others nipping at its heels within two points.

Omaha may be the "never say die" team of this season, but we have to give the advantage to Charlotte to take home the regular season title and the top seed in the playoffs.

Charlotte Wins the Table: 83%
Omaha Wins the Table: 17%

Omaha Finishes 2nd: 82%
Charlotte Finishes 2nd: 17%
Spokane Finishes 2nd, Omaha 3rd: >1%

Home Pitch

With Charlotte guaranteed to finish top two, and Omaha all but guaranteed baring an extremely long-shot play by Spokane (more on that below) to finish top two, the battle for the final two home spots should come down to four teams: Madison, Boise, Knoxville and Spokane.

Madison has stumbled a bit down the stretch, with no wins in its last three. They'll finish the season with two home matches, against Portland and Omaha. While the former can be unpredictable (see the recent comeback draw against Spokane), they're still on a slide as they limp through finishing a lost season. Still, with Omaha coming up next, and with the Owls fighting for the regular season title, the Mingos better treat Portland as a must-win.

Madison does have a major advantage should the 4th spot come down to a tie in points and wins with Boise: a massive difference in goal differential.

Madison Finishes 3rd: 27%
Madison Finishes 4th: 33%
Madison Finishes 5th: 30%
Madison Finishes 6th: 10%
Madison Finishes 7th: >1%

Boise has had its recent ups and downs, but seems to be finishing the season on an up with back to back wins over Greenville and Portland. They'll host a struggling AV Alta, then finish the season at Fort Wayne. Like Madison, that next match against a lowly opponent is a must win with a stronger challenge looming.

Boise and Madison have nearly equal odds to finish anywhere from 3rd to 7th in the table.

Boise Finishes 3rd: 27%
Boise Finishes 4th: 33%
Boise Finishes 5th: 29%
Boise Finishes 6th: 10%
Boise Finishes 7th: >1%

Knoxville only has one match remaining, and lost their "must win" match this weekend to Spokane. Therefore, they'll have to depend on taking three points at the Cosmos to finish the season, and hope that Madison, Boise and Spokane all struggle to generate points. However, it's looking like last year's regular season and playoff champs will start off this post-season on the road as the 6th seed.

Knoxville Finishes 3rd: 2%
Knoxville Finishes 4th: 9%
Knoxville Finishes 5th: 21%
Knoxville Finishes 6th: 62%
Knoxville Finishes 7th: 6%
Knoxville Finishes 8th: >1%

Sixth place Spokane has one huge advantage: matches in hand. With four matches remaining, there's a long-shot scenario (less than 1% probability) in which they jump as high as second place should they win out and Omaha not generate any further points.

Spokane Finishes 2nd: >1%
Spokane Finishes 3rd: 44%
Spokane Finishes 4th: 25%
Spokane Finishes 5th: 19%
Spokane Finishes 6th: 10%
Spokane Finishes 7th: 2%
Spokane Finishes 8th: >1%

More likely though, Spokane snatches away a home playoff spot from one of the other teams in this group. They just have to maximize points with three of four on the road at Greenville, Cosmos and Naples, and a final home match against Chattanooga.

Final Prediction:

  1. Spokane
  2. Madison
  3. Boise
  4. Knoxville

The Bubble

We predicted Chattanooga would clinch a playoff spot this past weekend, which ended up not happening thanks to wins by Naples, Fort Wayne and Sarasota. While they still hold a six-point advantage over ninth-place Naples, two losses by the Red Wolves and two wins by Naples would see the clubs tied in points and head to a tie-breaker, most likely won by Chattanooga on goal differential.

Worse, Chattanooga will have to pick up points on the road, at Spokane and the Cosmos. Recent inconsistent play has not inspired confidence, but even a single point would likely put them in the post-season.

Chattanooga Finishes 3rd or 4th: >1%
Chattanooga Finishes 5th: 2%
Chattanooga Finishes 6th: 5%
Chattanooga Finishes 7th: 58%
Chattanooga Finishes 8th: 34%
Chattanooga Misses Playoffs: >1%

Of course, the final placement of Chattanooga also depends on how Fort Wayne finishes the season. The upstart expansion club is just one point behind the Red Wolves, and has no losses in its last five. They'll also finish out the season at home against a Sarasota Paradise side fighting for its life and AC Boise who will be focused on clinching a home playoff match. Fort Wayne should not expect anything to be easy, but have been known to shine at home.

Fort Wayne Finishes 5th: >1%
Fort Wayne Finishes 6th: 4%
Fort Wayne Finishes 7th: 38%
Fort Wayne Finishes 8th: 57%
Fort Wayne Misses Playoffs: 1%

Final Prediction:

  1. Chattanooga
  2. Fort Wayne

Long Shots, Still In

There are two other teams that have not been eliminated: Naples and Sarasota.

Note: Westchester is ahead of Sarasota in the table, but cannot generate the points to clinch with only one match remaining.

Naples made an incredible turnaround to threaten for a spot after a dismal middle of the season. But it's most likely too-little-too-late, with the odds stacked against them. At five points back, and with a -9 goal differential, they'd face elimination this weekend without a win and a Fort Wayne loss.

Naples Finishes 7th: >1%
Naples Finishes 8th: 3%
Naples Finishes 9th: 70%
Naples Finishes 10th: 22%
Naples Finishes 11th: 5%
Naples Finishes 12th: >1%

Sarasota is a huge X-factor here, because they will face both Naples and Fort Wayne in their long-shot bid. However, the odds are that Sarasota may play light spoiler at best due to its 9-point deficit in the standings.

Sarasota Finishes 8th: >1%
Sarasota Finishes 9th: 19%
Sarasota Finishes 10th: 34%
Sarasota Finishes 11th: 22%
Sarasota Finishes 12th: 19%
Sarasota Finishes 13th: 4%
Sarasota Finishes 14th: >1%
