Why You Should Pay Attention to USL League One Tonight

It's a loaded day of soccer. The World Cup knockout rounds feature England vs. DR Congo at noon, Belgium vs. Senegal at 4:00 PM and, of course, the United States taking on Bosnia and Herzegovina at 8:00 PM (all times Eastern).

That may sound like enough soccer for one day. But before you settle in for Team USA, don't overlook USL League One. The league has four matches on Wednesday, and the schedule appears to have been built with the World Cup in mind, minimizing overlap wherever possible.

Our recommendation? Go full sicko. Make room for a little USL League One alongside the World Cup. Here's why.

Surging Corpus Christi Gets a Rematch With a Red Hot Charlotte

Kickoff: 5:30 PM ET
World Cup Overlap: second half of Belgium vs. Senegal

Back on May 9, Charlotte had little trouble handling a Corpus Christi side that was still searching for its first regular season win.

Charlotte hasn't slowed down since. That victory was just the second of its current seven-match winning streak, during which the Independence have scored a remarkable 21 goals while conceding just eight.

But over the past few weeks, Corpus Christi appears to have turned a corner. The Sharks enter Wednesday on a four-match unbeaten run, including three consecutive victories.

Their biggest test came last time out against AV Alta, where they earned a 0-0 draw. Despite the scoreline, Corpus Christi looked like the better side for much of the match—an important distinction given the quality gap between AV Alta and the Sharks' previous three opponents: Richmond, Sarasota and Portland.

Corpus Christi finished ahead in nearly every attacking category, including shots, shots on target and shots inside the box, despite controlling only about 28% possession. That fits the profile of an Éamon Zayed-led side, one that's comfortable absorbing pressure before striking quickly in transition.

The defense has improved as well. Corpus Christi has conceded just three goals during its unbeaten run, with goalkeeper James Talbot recording two clean sheets. Against AV Alta, the back line limited a possession-heavy opponent to just 10 shots, only three of them on target, and only four from inside the penalty area.

That's what makes this matchup so intriguing. AV Alta is enjoying an excellent season and ranks among the league's better attacking teams, but Charlotte has been even more dangerous. The lingering question is whether Corpus Christi's recent defensive improvements can travel. The Sharks are still searching for their first regular season road victory.

Was AV Alta the perfect dress rehearsal for a road test against one of the league's most explosive attacks? Wednesday should tell us whether Corpus Christi's recent surge is the start of a turnaround—or simply a hot stretch.

Chattanooga Red Wolves vs. Westchester SC

Kickoff: 7:00 PM ET
World Cup Overlap: first half of USA vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Just one season after nearly winning the Player's Shield, Chattanooga sits 11th in the table at the halfway point. But does that really tell the story of the Red Wolves' season?

Their 5-4-1 record is still comfortably above .500. While those four losses have cost them valuable points, Chattanooga enters the second half in a solid position to make another run, especially after consecutive wins over Portland and Naples heading into the break.

One player who deserves far more attention is homegrown midfielder Omar Hernandez, who's quietly building a mid-season MVP case. Long-range goals have become his trademark, and all three of his non-penalty goals this season have come from outside the box. Give Hernandez even a sliver of space, and he'll make you pay.

Westchester, meanwhile, continues to battle inconsistency. After exploding for nine goals in back-to-back home matches against Greenville and Portland, they were brought back to earth in a 2-1 loss at Spokane. It was a familiar story away from home, where they are still searching for their first regular season point.

Chattanooga hasn't been unbeatable at CHI Memorial Stadium, posting a 3-2-0 home record. The Den has a habit of producing chaotic matches, whether because of the playing surface, the tempo or simply the unpredictability of the Red Wolves themselves. Westchester has the attacking talent to embrace that kind of game, but can Conor McGlynn and company finally break through on the road—and give fans a few goals before most of the soccer world flips over to the USA match?

Spokane Velocity vs. Forward Madison

Kickoff: 10:00 PM ET
World Cup Overlap: late second half and any potential extra time of USA vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Originally scheduled an hour earlier, Spokane pushed kickoff back to 7:00 PM PT to reduce potential overlap with the USA match. There could still be some crossover with the second half, stoppage time or extra time, but fans should be able to catch most of both matches.

And this one should be worth watching. Spokane rebounded from its rare and emphatic home loss to One Knoxville with a 2-1 victory over Westchester before the break. That Knoxville result remains Velocity's only home defeat of the season at ONE Spokane Stadium.

Spokane sits fifth in the table despite scoring just 17 goals, fewer than the clubs around it. Instead, the Velocity have built their success on home consistency, grinding out seven wins, one more than fourth-place AV Alta.

Forward Madison, meanwhile, has quietly climbed into eighth after a slow start, putting together a 2-0-1 run entering the break.

The Mingos also look like a much more complete team than they did a season ago. After finishing 2025 with a -12 goal differential, they head into the second half at +7. Like Spokane, they've relied on contributions from throughout the squad, but with even more balance. Ten different Madison players have scored at least one goal this season, and ten have also recorded an assist.

With meaningful table implications on the line, expect both sides to come out aggressively. Spokane can climb as high as fourth with a victory, while a Madison win would vault the visitors past Velocity in the standings.

Union Omaha vs. AV Alta

Kickoff: 10:30 PM ET
World Cup Overlap: late extra time, penalty kicks

It's a bold move, but it just might work. Union Omaha pushed kickoff against AV Alta back to 9:30 PM CT so the club could host a Team USA watch party before the match. The hope, of course, is that fans stick around afterward to cheer on the Owls.

Omaha still sits atop the table with 28 points, but One Knoxville, Charlotte, AV Alta and Spokane remain close enough to keep the title race wide open. What makes this matchup especially intriguing is how different the two clubs look entering the second half. Omaha heads into the restart on a three-match losing streak, while AV Alta arrives unbeaten in nine.

The Owls' recent slide appears to be tied in part to several key injuries. True to form, though, Omaha wasted little time reinforcing the squad through the USL Championship loan market.

One of those additions is playmaker Allen Gavilanes from Indy Eleven. League One fans will remember his standout seasons with Greenville before he moved up a level ahead of the 2024 campaign. Gavilanes has already settled in nicely, scoring once while making four starts in his first six appearances.

Then on Monday, Omaha announced another attacking reinforcement: Marlon Vargas on loan from New Mexico United. The 25-year-old midfielder enjoyed multiple standout seasons in MLS NEXT Pro before joining New Mexico in 2024, where he produced three goals and four assists last season. With minutes harder to come by this year, Omaha offers a fresh opportunity—and the Owls could certainly use a player of his quality.

AV Alta, meanwhile, owns the longest active points streak in club history, going 6-0-3 since April 7. They've collected results home and away while several players have elevated their performances, including Adam Aoumaich, Christian Ortiz, Godwin Antwi and Jerry Desdunes.

Desdunes, in particular, has been playing at an MVP level. The midfielder has four goals, four assists and a league-leading 33 chances created, a remarkable rise for a player who spent two seasons without a club after his 2022 professional debut before AV Alta gave him a fresh opportunity last year.

The stakes couldn't be much higher. With Charlotte sitting just two points behind Omaha, the Owls need a victory to guarantee they'll remain atop the table at night's end. AV Alta, meanwhile, has a chance to extend its historic unbeaten run while pulling even closer to the league lead. If you're only able to squeeze in one League One match after Team USA, this is probably the one.
